Aretians 2018/19 season Roundup

Senior Men

As the season draws to the end, it is time to reflect and look back on what has occured. Finishing 7th in the league, was one place below where I aimed for at the beginning but nevertheless it was above one of our most fierce rivals Cotham Park, which is a great positive.

This season has had many low points, however from those many positives have occured and we have continued to grow as a club. We have welcomed a new coaching team of Big Tom, Bearded Tom and Boomer, who have all offered different skills and have become great assets to the club.  We have also had multiple new players join this season, Adam and Greg are just a couple of those who have made first team debuts this year.

We have seen our younger players thrive this year. Sam, Jack and Jake all becoming leaders on the pitch. George, Freddie, Wayne and Ryan all developing massively and becoming regular first team players. As well as the younger generation we have had the older heads of Paul, Luke and Jay amongst others to keep the team together and offer experience. We have welcomed a new fly half in Chris to the club, with his go go gadget arms and baabaa hands he has filled a massive hole that was missing in our club. Billy and Harry as well as others have offered versatility playing in multiple positions, but wherever they have played thry put their all in and displayed performances that anyone in the black and white would be proud of. These names are just a few names out of a greay club and without them this club would not continue. Our guys have put their body on the line week in week out and even with injuries they continued to and battle every week for the badge.

I would like to thank the captain's team of Jon, Paul and Wayne who have done there upmost to keep our second team going and battled to get a team out each week. This has lead to Spike, our veteran hitting his 750th game this year. It has seen players such as the previously mentioned, and Rahul and Big Ben come into the club and begin to develop as rugby players. It has seen Matt coming back and becoming a leader in the team as well as older heads such as Lou and Shippers coming back into the fold.

Also a massive thanks to our VC Luke, who has worked incredibly hard behind the scenes as well as being our fixture secretary. He has put one hell of a shift in on and off the pitch all year.

We had some stand out games, such as our first game of the season against Broadplain with Billy H dominating his opposite prop, and Billy W tearing the opposition apart in both defence and attack. Our home game against Ashley Down was also a stand out, with massive shifts in defence from the likes of Wayne, Duncan, Del Boy and Ryan. The forwards dominated and ground out a 17-17 draw against a team that finished in a play off spot. Spikes 750th was also one to remember and an achievement that cannot be underestimated, this is a huge honour! Beating Cotham Park was another game highlight and a day where our boys put in an almighty effort with our defence being key.

As mentioned, this season has come with low points. We unfortunately lost three key players in Billy H, Birdy and Jake to injury for large parts of the season. As well as our young Winger Henry moving away with work.
Losing to Cotham Park in the last few minutes was a bitter pill to swallow however, we showed great character beating them in the return leg. Also, losing to a last minute try in the corner whilst down to 13 against final league winners St Brendan's was tough to take, however showed that we could be up there and battle with the best in the league.

Overall we will take the positives of the season forward, leave the negative behind and build for a big season ahead. We have 7's tournaments planned in the off season as well as the coaching team putting into place our playbook and getting the players as fit as possible.

We aim to finish as high as possible in the league next year, this will come with the want and drive of our players, a great coaching team and the support of our ever present committee.

Anyone who wants to get into rugby no matter what your experience come down and get involved. We have welcomed many players this year, some with no rugby history at all, however they have developed and enjoyed playing.

Once again, I thank all those who have donned the black and white shirt this year. It has been an honour to lead this club, and I am hoping to carry on what we have started. Putting Aretians in a place where it once was.

Senior Ladies

Back before Christmas the ladies team hit a rocky patch, but then the new lead ladies coach made the team a promise to the team to put 100% into the team.

We are a team who stick together and are a family who are honoured to put on our shirts and play side by side.

Moving forward the ladies team are getting back into the league.

We welcome Steph as the new head coach, Brian and Ben. A new fresh coaching team ready to take the team forward.
A plan for pre-season Training arranged jointly with the Men’s bring the whole club together as one.
Every minute you spend on the pitch is an opportunity to learn and most importantly to have fun.

Aretians Juniors

This season has seen Aretians Juniors undergo a big shake-up and rearrangement, with new coaches joining us, new players, and new members of our committee.

We are now proud to say that we have a solid junior club full of talented players and dedicated coaches.

We have been to some good tournaments, and had some particularly fun games against Worcester RFC, who we are going to visit next season on tour.

We have seen our players move up through the age groups, building on their skills and expertise to bring home some well deserved wins. We are especially proud of all of this season's awards winners, and I would like to personally thank all coaches and parents that volunteer their time week on week to ensure the Aretians Cubs continue to thrive.

We look forward to moving into next season with the same enthusiasm and love for the game.

Aretians ladies

Yeovil rugby 7's

Last weekend Aretians Ladies made the journey to Yeovil to take part in their annual 7’s tournament.

Joining forces once again with our tour friends the Nantymoel Vixens who also entered, we started the day by comfortably winning our first match against Hornets. Following that we managed another win against our hosts Yeovil Ladies.

This resulted in us winning our pool and moving onto the semi finals, where we were greeted by local rivals St Mary’s Old Boys Ladies. Unfortunately we were not able to get the win we wanted, but we pulled our socks up and got another hard fought win against Hornets to be able to finish 3rd in the whole competition and winning the Ladies Plate.

It was an extremely proud day for all of the players, coaches and supporters who came to watch us, and we celebrated into the night dressed as our favourite pop and rock stars, and recovering from all of the bruises and sunburn!

Thank you Yeovil 7s for having us, see you next year!

Minis, Cubs & Juniors

2017/2018 has been another fantastic season for our Cubs/Minis & Junior sides.

We have continued to develop our reputation as a family friendly club in the heart of the community, something that has been achieved by a very passionate and hard working volunteer base. Our fully qualified coaches have a child centred approach to games/sessions creating a fun environment, something we as a club believe is the best way forward in their development.

It is a credit to all concerned that Aretians continue to build a reputation for being a great place to visit with many clubs now a regular fixture each season. In April we hosted Worcester RFC U7,U8,U9 for a second season and enjoyed a cracking day in the sun with 120 plus kids showing off their rugby skills. As is now tradition we also had a coaches game where the skills were perhaps less apparent!! Next year we have been invited to something the kids are really excited about not to mention the coaches and parents. We also hosted Brecon RFC U7 & U8 as part of their tour of the area which created a true international feel to another great day in the sun.

We have recently held our annual awards presentations with a packed marquee for both the Junior and Mini/Cubs events. It was great to see so many people supporting the event and having a cracking time celebrating our end of season.
Medals were given out to all our younger age groups and the following kids awards were presented at the two events:

U7 Most Improved Player Harry Hollister
Coaches Player of the Season Alice Seldon
Players Player of the Season Aniyah Mason
Player of the Season William Richards
U8 Most Improved Player Oliver Woolford
Coaches Player of the Season Oscar Johnson
Players Player of the Season Dylan Eidman
Player of the Season Kydn Morgan
U9 Most Improved Player Finlay Melhuish
Coaches Player of the Season Corbin Monks
Players Player of the Season Cody Claridge
Player of the Season Cameron West
U10 Most Improved Player Lily Hayward
Coaches Player of the Season Brandon Hanson
Players Player of the Season Redford Taylor
Player of the Season Charlie Edwards

U11 Most Improved Player Joe O’keefe
Coaches Player of the Season Pearl Bruford
Players Player of the Season Ryan Wyborn
Player of the Season Ethan Box
U13 Most Improved Player William Booy
Coaches Player of the Season Szymon Olinski
Players Player of the Season Matthew Curtis
Player of the Season Kobi Cordy-Rugman

We congratulate all our worthy winners but acknowledge that for every winner of an award there is a group of players that make up a team. All the kids should be proud of their contribution to a great season.

Yvonne Vobes was the winner of the The Mark Singer award for her contribution to the Minis & Cubs. Together with Gavin Hurle she has created something very special at the Cubs sessions. It just goes to show if chaos is organised it’s a bucket load of fun. Yvonne has also helped out with many other areas of the club making her a worthy winner of the award.
On the subject of awards the club introduced the ‘Young Rugby Ambassador Award’ which is given to any young member whether Senior men, ladies or Junior up to the age of 21 who has contributed above and beyond to the club.

The inaugural winner of the award was Emily Finnemore (sixteen) who received the YRAA at the ladies dinner. She has been with the club since twelve years of age and during that time has been part of the clubs coaching team helping out at many age groups, always around to help at the various events, photographer at Senior and Junior events and just about anything else you could think of! She currently part of the RFU Young Rugby Ambassador Programme and as a result was chosen to attend an England training session earlier this year. Also during the Ladies Dinner one of the guest speakers (Gary Street the England World Cup Winning Coach) was so impressed by Emilys story that he is arranging a special coaching session for her with some England Ladies. Indeed a great credit to the club. Well done Emily.
Once again we had a strong presence at the Patchway Remembrance Parade with the boys and girls representing the club and their community in a very respectful manner showing the club in a very good light, a very proud day as all those Aretian shirts marched along Coniston Rd.

A huge thank you to all the Coaches, volunteers and parents for supporting the club in its vision of developing young talent not just as rugby players but as characters in their own right.

Watch this space for some up and coming events during the summer.

Brian (Junior Chairman)

Senior Ladies

The past season really has been one to remember for Aretians Ladies. Under a new coaching team led by Rez Aminnia, supported by Scott Child and Steph Morgan, the ladies have gone from strength to strength, and our ever growing team is increasing in size every week.

We have faced some tough competition this season, which has pushed us to play some of the best rugby we can play, and in some very harsh conditions! With the fast legs of Lauren Matthews and the boot of Jade Gamlin we have put points on the board in every match, and put up a strong fight against our opposition every single time.

Vice captain Rosie Bellisio has also been instrumental in leading the back line in particular, with Isolyne Asare using her experience to improve the back three week by week. In the forwards, there are many players who have moved positions due to injury, but with the support and experience of Carly Winkworth, Louise Downham and Lauren Forrow our scrum has become one of the strongest areas of our game.

Due to the unfortunate episodes of snow, many of our fixtures had to be rearranged, resulting in us having to play every weekend in April. This took its toll on us but no matter what we carried on playing with smiles on our faces. We finished the season with a thrilling tour match against the Nantymoel Vixens, the result being the closest in the whole season!

Thank you to all of our supporters over the past year, we hope you continue to follow us as we enter the 2018/19 season, and we can’t wait to get back on that pitch in September!

Captain Bins.

Senior men

A welcomed end to the season, a successful Tour and an alcohol filled Dinner. It has been a season of challenges, but with true Aretian passion and determination, we pulled together as a team with multiple positives coming from it.

No matter the result, we had key players training week in week out; Kai Webb, Jake Webb, Jonathan Hammond-Williams, Billy Wills, Ian Wyborn (Frosty’s Pies keeping the team going), Ben Sambrook, Jamie Rowe, Paul Lewis, Ryan Ley just to name a few. Plus a big thank you to the rest of you A’s! One Player who showed true passion, even after being dropped into the 2nd Team was Luke Howe, who trained solidly to earn that first team shirt back and who then become an asset to the 1st Team.

As well as on the training pitch, key games such as Broadplain away, Minchinhampton at Home showed how committed we were to survive the season. There were many standout players who all donned the shirt this year. We had veterans Chris Hill, Neil Dix and Stuart Sims having a run out with the first team showing the Aretians Spirit!

We had new players joining, one being Freddie Williams, who epitomises Aretians and become and integral part of the team. Other new players that took to the club like a duck would to water was Dan Mann putting in the big hits adding dynamic to the second row and Harry Vance who stood out with 4 man of the match performances. Both went out to win the coveted award of tourist of the tour. Through training and playing, many players improved their own games, with Ryan Ley being one of those standout players, from being a fringe 2nd Team player, to a vital player for the 1st XV playing at both Loose and Tight head.

A notable mention to the player that showed incredible passion and commitment, travelling from the other side of Bristol to train and play on the field of dream, an influential player giving it all and earning the respect of his fellow team mates, was Paul Lewis.

As well as all the players who stuck together, we couldn’t of it without the people behind the scenes. Daryl Lloyd, Geordie (real name unknown), Martin Head and Tom Feltham all helped to keep the club house maintained as well as sponsoring the club and keeping the players taped together through the knowledgable hands of Tom Feltham (TF Therapies). Another member of Aretians volunteering his time to help the 1st Team was Martin Bywater, running the line at every game and providing the sports drinks and water.

Overall, there are many positives from the 17/18 season to take forward and develop. With prospects of young players coming through and putting Aretians back where they belong

Thank you all for your hard work!

See you all at pre-season
